The Mickey Welton Band comprises five Essex-based musicians: Mickey Welton (lead vocals), Dave Plummer (drums), Steve Wheeler, (guitar & backing vocals), John Donnelly, (guitar & backing vocals) & John Elsey, (bass guitar & backing vocals). The guys are all ex-professionals with a wide variety of experiences behind them including touring (Mickey and John once teamed up and toured in Europe and the UK with Spencer Davis for a short time - billed as the Spencer Davis Group - when Stevie Winwood suddenly parted company with the band), recording, sessions work and teaching - Steve being the principal educationalist amongst them with some high-flying students to his credit. The guys’ music mainly centres on seventies and eighties soft rock and funk with songs specially selected to be instantly recognisable and dancefloor fillable wherever they perform. Mickey is possessed of a powerful vocal style perfectly suited to the material chosen for the band’s repertoire while Steve and John D’s complementary lead guitar performances, Dave’s rock-solid, infectious drumming grooves and John E’s tight low registers add up to one highly listenable and visually stimulating performance night after night.
